For UAE National Day, celebrated as Eid Al Etihad on 2 December, wear the flag colours as an accent rather than a costume: a green, red or black gown with a contrasting detail, or a neutral outfit with an official Eid Al Etihad scarf. For New Year's Eve, dress to the venue, from black tie at hotel gala dinners to elegant midi lengths on yachts and terraces. Bring a layer for both, because December evenings in Dubai average about 17°C, and if you are ordering online, allow about three weeks for delivery, or five to six weeks if you want time for an exchange.
When is UAE National Day, and what is Eid Al Etihad?
UAE National Day marks the union of the emirates on 2 December 1971. Since 2024 the celebrations have been officially called Eid Al Etihad, which translates as the celebration of the union. Khaleej Times reports that the organising team describes this as a return to the Arabic name the founders used, rather than a new one. 2 December 2026 is the 55th Eid Al Etihad.
The public holiday is usually two days. Khaleej Times lists 2 and 3 December 2026, a Wednesday and Thursday, but holidays can be moved by Cabinet decision, so check the official announcement closer to the time.
Commemoration Day comes first, on 30 November, a Monday in 2026. It honours those who have given their lives for the country. As Gulf News describes it, flags are lowered to half-mast from 8am, a minute of silence is held at 11:30am, and the flag is raised again with the national anthem. It is a day of remembrance, not a party, so keep festive outfits for 2 December.
How do you wear the UAE flag colours tastefully?
The flag's four colours each carry meaning. According to the UAE Cabinet's flag guide, as reported by Khaleej Times, red honours the sacrifices of the founding generation and the nation's martyrs, green stands for growth and prosperity, white for the country's charitable work and support for peace, and black for the strength of its citizens.
The key distinction is between wearing the colours and wearing the flag. Official flag guidance from the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, reported by Gulf News, says the flag should not be used for decoration or costume, nor have designs or images added to it. For the 2024 celebrations, the Ministry of Interior also asked people to wear only scarves made specifically for Eid Al Etihad.
Ways to wear the colours with respect:
- One colour as the base: an emerald, deep green, red or black gown, with the other colours in jewellery, a bag or a shayla.
- A neutral outfit with an official Eid Al Etihad scarf.
- Colour blocking in separate pieces, such as a black kaftan with a green lining or a red belt, rather than four stripes in a row.
- Small details: enamel earrings, embroidered cuffs or a beaded clutch in the colours.
Avoid anything that copies the flag's exact layout, prints the flag on a garment, or could be worn, sat on or discarded in a disrespectful way.

What should you wear to National Day events?
Eid Al Etihad brings everything from office celebrations to fireworks and private family dinners, so match the outfit to the event.
- Office or school celebrations: a kaftan, jalabiya or modest midi dress in one of the colours, worn with flat or block-heeled shoes.
- Heritage events and fireworks: you will be outdoors and on your feet in a crowd. A long, loose kaftan or a midi with sleeves, flat sandals and a wrap for after dark.
- Private dinners and hotel events: an evening gown or a hand-beaded kaftan. Gold embroidery on a deep base colour looks festive without being literal.
Kaftans suit the occasion particularly well. The embroidered Arabic kaftan, for example, comes in black with gold embroidery and sleeves lined in lime green, so a touch of green shows when you move rather than a copy of the flag. Browse more in kaftans.
What should you wear to a New Year's Eve gala dinner in Dubai?
New Year's Eve gala dinners in Dubai's hotel ballrooms are usually black tie or formal, and they are among the most dressed-up nights of the year. In 2026, 31 December falls on a Thursday.
- Length: floor-length is the safe choice. Our guide to black tie, formal and cocktail codes in Dubai explains the differences.
- Shine: this is the night for sequins, crystal and metallic beading. Sequinned mermaid skirts and beaded bodices catch candlelight and fireworks.
- Colour: black, gold, silver, champagne, burgundy and emerald all suit the occasion. Very pale shades can look white in flash photographs.
- Midnight: many guests step outside to watch the fireworks, so have a wrap, cape or evening coat ready.
If you are dining in a women-only setting or with family, a beaded kaftan in black or gold is just as festive and easier to wear through a long evening.
What should you wear to a New Year's Eve yacht or dhow party?
A party on the water is dressier than it sounds but far less forgiving than a ballroom. The deck moves, the wind picks up after dark, and you may be climbing on and off from a pontoon.
- Length: midi or ankle length. A long train or very full skirt is hard to manage on steps and in the wind.
- Silhouette: a column dress, a jumpsuit in an evening fabric or a fluid kaftan moves well and stays modest when the breeze catches it.
- Shoes: flat or low wedge sandals with a grippy sole. Thin heels can slip on a wet deck or catch between boards, so ask the host or operator what they recommend.
- Layers: a wrap or a cropped jacket you can keep on. The air over the water is cooler than on land.
- Hair: if you cover your hair, use extra pins. If you do not, a low bun or a sleek ponytail survives the wind better than loose waves.

How cold are Dubai evenings in December?
Mild by day, cool by night. Climate normals for Dubai International Airport for 1991–2020 put the average December high at about 26.5°C and the average low at about 17.4°C. Inland desert camps are usually cooler than the coast after dark, and terraces, rooftops and boats feel colder than the thermometer suggests once the wind picks up.
That makes December the month for fabrics you would never wear in summer:
- Velvet and heavier satin, which hold warmth and look rich at night.
- Long sleeves, sheer or lined, and capes that double as a wrap.
- A pashmina, an evening coat or a long kimono-style jacket for arrivals and fireworks.
- Closed or slingback shoes rather than the barest sandals for desert and garden venues.
If you are going to a desert dinner, check whether the hosts provide heaters or fire pits, and bring a layer either way.

When should you order a National Day or New Year's Eve outfit?
Work back from the date of the event. Pieces from Lianora take 10–15 days to arrive across the GCC from when the order is confirmed, and availability is confirmed within 24 hours. Exchanges are accepted within 7 days of delivery for unworn pieces in their original packaging. A replacement then has to reach you too, so if you want room for a second try, plan for it as a second delivery and ask before you order how long an exchange is likely to take.
- No room for an exchange: allow the full 15 days plus a few days' margin, which means ordering about three weeks before the event.
- Room for an exchange: allow up to 15 days for delivery, two or three days to try the dress on and send it back, and another delivery window for the replacement, which means ordering five to six weeks before.
- Less than three weeks to go: check before you order that delivery can still arrive in time, and keep a back-up outfit in mind.
Applied to this season, that gives these order-by dates:
- Eid Al Etihad, 2 December: about 21 October with room for an exchange, and about 11 November at the latest.
- New Year's Eve, 31 December: about 19 November with room for an exchange, and about 10 December at the latest.
- Both occasions: if you want separate outfits, order them together by about 21 October.
Before you order, check the sizes and fit guide and the delivery and returns page. When the dress arrives, try it on straight away with the shoes you plan to wear, and steam it the day before the event.
Questions
Can I wear the UAE flag as a dress or a cape?
No. The official flag guidelines, reported by Gulf News, say the flag should not be used for decoration or costume. Wear the colours instead, in a gown, a kaftan or accessories, and if you want a scarf, choose one made specifically for Eid Al Etihad.
Can residents who are not Emirati wear the flag colours on National Day?
Yes. Eid Al Etihad is celebrated across the whole community, and residents of every nationality join in, often in the flag colours. Keep it respectful: colours and official scarves rather than the flag itself, and a more sober outfit on Commemoration Day.
Do I need a long dress for New Year's Eve in Dubai?
For a hotel gala dinner, usually yes, because most are black tie or formal. For a yacht, a terrace or a restaurant, an elegant midi or a jumpsuit in an evening fabric is often more practical. Check the event's dress code, and when in doubt in a ballroom, go long.
What colours suit New Year's Eve?
Metallics and deep colours: gold, silver, champagne, black, burgundy, emerald and navy. Sequins and beading suit the occasion better than on almost any other night, but test very pale metallics in flash photos, since they can look white.
