A graduation in the UAE is often two events: the formal ceremony, run by the university or school with its own dress code, and a family celebration afterwards that can be as dressy as an engagement. Many universities publish rules for what graduates wear under the gown, and some specify colours. This guide covers what to wear if you are graduating, if you are a guest, and if you are going to the party.
What do graduates wear under the gown in the UAE?
Check your own university's instructions first, because they differ and some are strict. Three published examples show the range.
- Khalifa University set out a dress code for its 2019 ceremony at Emirates Palace: Emirati women in a black shayla, black abaya and subtle make-up; non-Emirati women in a black hijab if they wear one and a plain dark top, also with subtle make-up. Graduates ordered the academic abaya-style gown, at AED 390, from a named tailor.
- Zayed University's instructions for its 2015 graduation told women to wear comfortable clothing under the gown, and men to choose a white ghutra and kandura or a black suit with a bisht. An older ZU page suggested dark clothing under the gown because of the stage lighting.
- MBZUAI's 2025 and 2026 commencement guidance welcomes UAE national dress under the gown, and asks that dresses or skirts fall below the knee.
The common thread: dark, plain and modest under the gown, with the gown, cap and any sash doing the talking.
Practical tips for graduates on the day
The ceremony is long, the stage is bright and you will walk, climb steps and stand for photographs.
- Shoes you can climb stairs in. Stage steps and a long skirt are a classic combination for a stumble. A low block heel or elegant flat is safer than a stiletto.
- A neckline that sits under the gown. High or round necklines look tidy at the collar; a wide or off-shoulder neckline shows awkwardly.
- Pin your shayla or hijab securely, since the cap sits on top and you will move your head for photographs.
- Fabric that breathes. Graduation gowns are usually polyester and hot under stage lights. Wear cotton, crepe or a light lining underneath.
- Keep jewellery small. Earrings and a ring photograph well; necklaces disappear under the gown.
- Plan a change if you are going straight to a party, so the outfit for the evening is not the one you wore under the gown all afternoon.
Think about the photographs too. The official photographer will capture you on stage, but the pictures families keep are the ones taken outside the hall afterwards, with flowers, balloons and relatives. A neat shayla or hairstyle, a touch more make-up than you would wear to class and a gown that has been steamed rather than pulled straight from its bag make the difference. Keep a small kit in your bag: safety pins, blotting papers, a lip colour and flat shoes for the walk back to the car. If you hired the gown, check when it must be returned, so a celebration that runs late does not cost you a fee.
What should guests wear to a graduation ceremony?
Graduation ceremonies in the UAE are formal public events, often in hotel ballrooms or large halls. Khalifa University's 2019 ceremony was at Emirates Palace, and Gulf News has reported school graduations held there too. Guests usually receive a limited number of tickets, two per graduate at both Khalifa University in 2019 and Zayed University in 2015, so the women attending are often the graduate's mother and closest relatives.
- Smart and modest: an elegant abaya, a long-sleeved maxi dress or a tailored kaftan.
- Day-formal, not evening-formal, for an afternoon ceremony: rich fabric and good tailoring rather than sequins.
- Comfortable shoes, because there is often a walk from parking or valet and a long wait to be seated.
- A light layer, since ballrooms are cold.
- Arrive early. Zayed University asked visitors to arrive 30 minutes before the start, and doors may close.
Some ceremonies are held separately for women and men, so the women's ceremony may feel more relaxed in dress, but the public setting still calls for modest, polished clothes.

What about school graduations?
School graduations have become bigger occasions in the UAE. Gulf News's annual round-ups of how schools celebrate their graduating classes describe traditions such as a festive "Final 50" evening marking the last 50 days of school, senior breakfasts and award ceremonies, and graduation ceremonies in hotel venues.
For parents and relatives, the dress code is close to a university ceremony: smart and modest, with comfortable shoes. For the graduates themselves, many schools also hold a formal or prom-style evening, and that is where the evening gown comes out. Check the school's guidance on hemlines, sleeves and footwear, which can be stricter than you expect.
What should you wear to a graduation party?
In many Gulf families, the real celebration happens afterwards: a women's gathering at home, in a hotel or in a rented hall, with music, cake and photographs. These can be as dressy as an engagement.
- For the graduate: this is her night. An evening gown in a colour that suits her, a statement kaftan or a dress in the university's colours are all popular. A sash with her name and year is a common touch.
- For guests: dress one step below the graduate. A smart evening dress, a beaded kaftan or an elegant two-piece suits a hotel gathering; a lighter kaftan suits a party at home.
- For the graduate's mother: something polished that will photograph well beside her daughter, in a complementary rather than matching colour.
For dressier parties, our guide to engagement party outfits in the Gulf covers similar dress codes.

Questions
Can I wear a coloured dress under my graduation gown?
It depends on your university. Some, such as Khalifa University in 2019, asked women for black or dark clothing; others only ask for modest, below-knee hems. Check the official instructions for your ceremony.
How many guests can attend a UAE university graduation?
Usually only a few per graduate. Khalifa University in 2019 and Zayed University in 2015 both gave each graduate two invitations, though numbers vary by year and venue.
What colour should I wear to my graduation party?
Any colour that suits you; it is your night. Many graduates choose their university's colours, or white, gold or a jewel tone that photographs well with a sash and flowers.
