In short: an evening dress is the broad family of dresses for night-time events; an evening gown is its most formal, floor-length member; a ball gown is a particular evening-gown silhouette with a fitted bodice and a full skirt; a cocktail dress is shorter and less formal, usually knee to midi length; and a prom dress is not a shape at all but an American term for what young women wear to a school dance. Here is how to tell them apart, and which to wear when.

What is an evening dress, and what is an evening gown?

"Evening dress" is the umbrella term. The antiques and fashion marketplace 1stDibs describes it as covering a range of styles, lengths and designs, from shorter cocktail dresses to long formal gowns. Anything made for a night-time occasion, in a fabric and finish a step above day wear, counts.

"Evening gown" is narrower: it is the most formal category of women's dress, defined mainly by its floor-length hem and elevated fabrics, as the bridesmaid brand Azazie's guide to evening and cocktail attire puts it. Historically, the term took hold in the 19th century, when, according to the Apparel Search fashion reference, the fashionable length moved from the ankle to the floor during Queen Victoria's reign.

In Arabic, the single phrase فستان سهرة usually covers both, which is why Gulf invitations rarely say "gown": an evening wedding simply assumes floor length.

What makes a ball gown different?

A ball gown is defined by its silhouette, not its length (it is always long). Fashion references describe it as having a fitted bodice and a full, flared skirt, often supported by layers of tulle or a petticoat, while an evening gown can be any shape. It is the dress of the grand ballroom, the princess moment, and the most dramatic option in a room.

Other evening-gown silhouettes you will see on labels:

  • A-line: fitted at the bodice, widening gently from the waist. Flattering on most shapes and easy to move in.
  • Mermaid or trumpet: fitted through the hips, flaring at or below the knee. Glamorous, but harder to sit and dance in.
  • Column or sheath: a straight line from shoulder or bust to hem. Sleek and modern.
  • Empire: a high waist just under the bust, with a flowing skirt. Comfortable and graceful.
  • Kaftan: loose and straight, the Gulf's own formal silhouette when it is embroidered or beaded.

What is a cocktail dress?

A cocktail dress is a dressy but shorter dress for early-evening and semi-formal events. Azazie's guide places the hem between the knee and mid-thigh, while noting that midi lengths are increasingly accepted. The Emily Post Institute, the American etiquette authority, treats cocktail attire as a step below black tie: women in a cocktail dress, men in a suit.

In practice:

  • Length: knee to mid-calf. Midi is the most versatile in the Gulf.
  • Fabrics: silk, satin, crepe, lace and light embellishment.
  • When: early-evening receptions, corporate drinks, smart dinners, engagement parties in some circles and many Western-style events.

In the Gulf, a cocktail dress rarely suits a traditional evening wedding, where floor length is expected. For the women's hall, choose a long gown or a formal kaftan instead.

What is a prom dress?

Prom is the formal dance American high schools hold at the end of the year, and a prom dress is whatever students wear to it. Because the occasion is festive and young, the label has come to mean a particular style: long or short, with lots of sparkle, bright colours, sequins, beading, high slits and dramatic shapes. Several well-known evening wear labels, including the Turkish brand Tarik Ediz, began or grew by making prom gowns.

When you see "prom" on a dress for sale, read it as "glamorous evening dress, often fitted and embellished". Many make lovely graduation-party or engagement dresses in the Gulf, but check the coverage: prom styles often have low backs, plunging necklines or thigh-high slits that need adjusting for a family wedding. Our guide to what to wear to a graduation in the UAE covers that occasion.

Which dress does each dress code call for?

Using the Emily Post Institute's attire guide as the reference:

  • White tie: the most formal. Floor-length gowns only; a ball gown is ideal.
  • Black tie: a floor-length evening gown, or a very dressy cocktail dress in Western settings. In the Gulf, go long.
  • Black tie optional or formal: a floor-length gown or a dressy cocktail dress.
  • Cocktail: a cocktail dress, or an elegant midi or jumpsuit.
  • Semi-formal or smart elegant: a cocktail dress, a dressy midi or an evening kaftan.

For Gulf occasions specifically:

  • Evening wedding, women's hall: an evening gown, a ball gown or a beaded kaftan.
  • Henna night: a festive kaftan, a thobe or a colourful long dress.
  • Engagement or milcha: a gown or a dressy midi, depending on the family.
  • Corporate gala: follow the invitation; usually a long gown.

Other terms you will see on labels

A few more words come up again and again when shopping for formal dresses:

  • Maxi dress: any ankle- or floor-length dress. Day maxis are casual; evening maxis in satin or chiffon can work for smart occasions.
  • Midi: a hem between the knee and the ankle, usually mid-calf.
  • Train: extra fabric that trails behind a gown. Sweep trains just brush the floor; longer trains are mostly for brides.
  • Cape and capelet: a layer of fabric falling from the shoulders, a popular way to add coverage to a gown.
  • Corset bodice: a structured, boned top that shapes the waist.
  • Two-piece: a matching top and skirt, or a kaftan worn over a slip, that reads as one outfit.

Knowing these makes it easier to filter online and to describe what you want to a boutique or tailor.

Questions

Is a ball gown the same as an evening gown?

Every ball gown is an evening gown, but not every evening gown is a ball gown. A ball gown has the specific fitted-bodice, full-skirt shape; an evening gown can be any long silhouette.

Can I wear a cocktail dress to a wedding in the Gulf?

For a traditional evening wedding, it is better to wear a floor-length gown or a formal kaftan. A cocktail dress can suit a daytime or Western-style reception if the invitation allows it.

What length is a cocktail dress?

Usually from just above the knee to mid-calf. Midi lengths are increasingly accepted and are the most versatile choice in the Gulf.
