In the Gulf, a new baby can mean several different invitations: a visit to the mother at home in the weeks after the birth, a women's baby shower before or after the birth, a gender reveal, or an aqiqah dinner. They range from very simple to very glamorous, and the right outfit depends far more on which one it is than on the season. Here is how to read the invitation and what to wear to each.
How are new babies traditionally welcomed in the Gulf?
Long before the baby shower arrived from the West, Gulf families had their own customs. An April 2024 feature in the Abu Dhabi newspaper Al Ittihad, on a stage production that recreates them, describes the traditional Emirati pattern: in the last days of pregnancy the mother moved to her own mother's house, and returned to her husband's home 40 days after the birth. Her return was celebrated across the neighbourhood, with animals slaughtered and meat shared with neighbours, gifts from her mother-in-law, and nourishing dishes brought by the women next door.
Islamic customs add their own milestones. A review of Islamic practices after childbirth published in an Iranian paediatrics journal lists the call to prayer in the baby's ear, the aqiqah sacrifice, shaving the baby's hair, congratulations and a celebratory meal. Many Gulf families still mark the aqiqah with a dinner for relatives and friends.
The 40-day period remains important to many families, and it shapes when and how visitors come.
What should you wear to visit a new mother at home?
This is the most common invitation and the least formal. You are visiting someone who is tired, recovering and often surrounded by family. Dress neatly, modestly and quietly.
- A simple abaya or a smart day kaftan is always right. Many women visit in an abaya over day clothes.
- Soft colours and plain fabrics: nothing with heavy beading, sequins or sharp embellishment that could scratch a baby if you are offered a hold.
- Go light on perfume. Newborns are sensitive to strong scents, and the mother may be too. Skip the oud for this visit.
- Short nails and little jewellery on your hands, for the same reason.
- Keep the visit short unless you are asked to stay.
If the family hosts a larger gathering around the end of the 40 days, the dress code steps up to a smart, dressier day look.

What should you wear to a baby shower?
A baby shower in the Gulf is usually a women's party, at home, in a hotel lounge or in a restaurant's private room, and it can be anything from an afternoon tea to a styled event with a theme and a photographer. Hotels in Dubai such as Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Conrad Dubai advertise packages for baby celebrations and gender reveals, which gives a sense of how elaborate some have become.
- Afternoon, at home or a café: a midi or maxi day dress, a smart jumpsuit, or a light kaftan in a pastel or floral.
- Hotel or styled event: a dressier maxi dress or a light evening kaftan, the level you would wear to an engagement or a smart lunch.
- Check the theme. Many invitations name a colour. Follow it in an accessory if you do not have a dress to match.
- Avoid white if the mother-to-be is wearing it, as many do for the photographs.
For the guest of honour herself, a loose kaftan or an empire-waist gown is comfortable in late pregnancy and photographs beautifully.
What about gender reveal parties?
Gender reveals have grown in the Gulf, sometimes on a dramatic scale. In 2020, Arab News and AFP reported on a Dubai influencer couple who lit up the Burj Khalifa in blue to announce a boy, an event that drew both congratulations and criticism over its cost and timing. Most are far smaller: a family dinner, a cake, smoke or confetti in the garden.
The dress code is usually relaxed and playful.
- Follow the colour game if there is one. Some hosts ask guests to wear pink or blue for their guess, or a neutral so no one gives anything away.
- Dress for the venue: a garden reveal means flat shoes and a dress that can cope with confetti; a restaurant means smart casual.
- Pastels and neutrals photograph well beside pink and blue décor.
Gender reveals are not to every family's taste, so take the cue from the hosts and the invitation.
What should you wear to an aqiqah dinner?
The aqiqah is a religious occasion as well as a celebration: the sacrifice is made to give thanks for the baby, and the meat is shared with family, friends and those in need. When a family hosts a dinner for it, the tone is warm and traditional rather than glamorous.
- A modest, elegant kaftan or abaya is the safest choice, in a rich but not flashy colour.
- Women's and men's areas are often separate, as at a wedding, so you may be more dressed-up in the women's majlis than you would be in public.
- Keep embellishment moderate. An embroidered neckline or cuffs is perfect; a full sequinned gown is too much.

What makes a good gift, and how do you arrive?
A few customs are worth knowing whatever you wear.
- Gifts for the baby are welcome at every one of these occasions: clothes in the next size up, a blanket or a keepsake. Gold, such as a small bracelet or a pendant, is a traditional gift for a newborn in many Gulf families.
- Something for the mother is often more appreciated than another baby outfit: a comfortable kaftan for the weeks at home, a scented candle she can enjoy later or a meal.
- Call before visiting rather than arriving unannounced, and avoid prayer and meal times.
- Do not photograph the baby or post pictures without the parents' clear permission.
The guiding idea is the same as in the traditional welcome Al Ittihad describes: support the mother first, and celebrate the baby with her.

Questions
When can I visit a new mother in the Gulf?
Ask the family first. Close relatives often visit in the early days, while friends may wait or be invited to a gathering later, especially in families that observe the traditional 40-day rest.
Is a baby shower held before or after the birth in the Gulf?
Both happen. Western-style showers are usually before the birth, while many Gulf families prefer to celebrate after the baby arrives, sometimes at the end of the 40 days.
Can I wear perfume when visiting a newborn?
Keep it very light or skip it. Strong scents such as oud and bakhoor can bother a newborn and a recovering mother, especially in a closed, air-conditioned room.
