For a ready-made evening dress, aim to buy six to eight weeks before the event; for a made-to-order designer gown, three to four months or more; for a dress made by a tailor, two to three months. Those numbers are not about the shop. They are about everything that happens after the dress arrives: trying it on, exchanging it if it is wrong, and leaving a tailor enough time to hem and fit it. Here is how to work out your own deadline.
Why does buying early matter so much?
Because a gown is rarely ready to wear the day it arrives. A floor-length dress almost always needs hemming for your height and shoes, and many need the bust, waist or straps adjusted. If something is wrong with the size or colour, an exchange means another delivery. And in the Gulf, tailors are busiest exactly when you need them: in the weeks before Eid and through the wedding season. UNESCO's description of Al Talli, the Emirati braided embroidery, notes that demand for the craft peaks before Eid and in the summer wedding season, and the same is true of alterations.
The rule is to plan backwards from the event, adding up every step, rather than forwards from the day you start shopping.
How long do alterations take?
Less for a guest dress than for a bridal gown, but more than most people expect in busy months.
- David's Bridal, the American bridal chain, says in its alterations FAQ that it can usually alter bridesmaid, social-occasion and other dresses within two weeks, with a rush fee possible for faster work. It allows about half an hour for a first fitting of a formal dress.
- Bridal gowns take far longer: Azazie's guide to alterations puts most wedding-dress alterations at six to ten weeks from first fitting to pickup, with two or three fittings.
- Complexity matters. A simple hem or strap adjustment is quick; reshaping a neckline, adding sleeves or re-beading a seam takes much longer.
For a Gulf evening gown, plan on at least two to three weeks with your tailor, and more for heavily beaded pieces or in the fortnight before Eid. Our guide to alterations partnerships for boutiques explains why beaded gowns take longer to alter.

How long do different kinds of dresses take to arrive?
The lead time depends on how the dress is made.
- In stock at a boutique: you can walk out with it, but the choice of size and colour is limited to what is on the rail.
- Ready-made, shipped online: usually one to three weeks to the Gulf, depending on where it ships from and how quickly customs clear.
- Made to order by a brand: typically several weeks to a few months. Azazie, for example, describes its dresses as cut and sewn after the order is placed. Dubai's You & I Bridal lists 12–14 weeks of production for Tania Olsen bridesmaid dresses, with a rush option of 8–10 weeks at extra cost.
- Bridal and couture gowns: Azazie's guide notes that made-to-order wedding dresses commonly take four to six months to arrive.
- Tailor-made: depends on the workshop's queue, plus at least two fittings. Allow two to three months for an evening gown, more before Eid.
A working-back timeline for a ready-made gown
Here is a realistic plan for a ready-made evening dress ordered online, counting back from the event:
- 8 weeks before: shortlist and order. Check delivery time, exchange terms and whether duty is included.
- 6 weeks before: the dress arrives. Try it on the same day, unaltered, with the shoes and underwear you will wear.
- 5–6 weeks before: if it is wrong, request the exchange now, while you are still inside the exchange window and before any tailor touches it.
- 4–5 weeks before: first fitting with your tailor, with the final dress.
- 2 weeks before: second fitting or pickup.
- 1 week before: final try-on with accessories; steam the dress and hang it in a breathable cover.
If you have several events in a season, such as a henna night and a wedding a few days apart, plan for the earlier date.
What if you are short of time?
It is still possible, with some trade-offs.
- Two to four weeks out: buy in person or from a shop that delivers within days, so you can try on immediately. Choose a cut that needs little or no alteration, such as a kaftan, an A-line or a dress with an adjustable corset back.
- Under two weeks: buy something that fits off the rail, or consider renting. Ask a tailor for a hem only, and pay the rush fee if needed.
- Days away: wear something you already own and restyle it with new accessories, a cape or a different shayla. Our guide on wearing the same dress to two weddings has ideas.
What to avoid when rushed: heavily beaded gowns that are hard to alter, mermaid shapes that must fit exactly, and anything you cannot exchange if it is wrong.
Key dates to plan around in 2027
The busiest dress-buying moments in the Gulf follow the calendar. Based on astronomical forecasts reported by Gulf News in October 2026, which depend on the moon sighting:
- Ramadan 2027: expected to begin around 8 February. Order iftar and Eid outfits by mid-January.
- Eid al-Fitr 2027: expected on 9 or 10 March. Order by about 20 February at the latest for a ready-made piece.
- Eid al-Adha 2027: expected on 16 or 17 May. Order by late April.
- Saudi Founding Day: 22 February. Saudi National Day: 23 September. UAE National Day: 2 December.
- Wedding season: the cooler months from October to April are especially busy, and UNESCO's description of Al Talli also points to a summer wedding season in the UAE.
Our Eid al-Fitr 2027 outfit guide and Eid al-Adha 2027 outfit guide give the detail for each holiday.
Where Lianora fits
Lianora's evening and bridesmaid dresses are made by established Turkish ateliers and arrive 10–15 days after the order is confirmed, anywhere in the UAE and the GCC, with customs duties and taxes paid by Lianora. Unworn pieces in their original packaging can be exchanged within 7 days of delivery, and altered pieces cannot, so the timeline above, ordering about eight weeks ahead, fits well. Browse the evening dresses, and read delivery and returns before you plan.
Questions
How early should I buy a dress for a wedding?
For a ready-made gown, six to eight weeks before. That leaves time for delivery, an exchange if needed and two to three weeks of alterations. Allow three months or more for made-to-order or tailor-made gowns.
Can I get a dress altered in a week?
A simple hem, often yes, especially with a rush fee. Bigger changes, or alterations to beaded gowns, usually take longer, and tailors are busiest just before Eid.
When should bridesmaids order their dresses?
Earlier than guests, because a group needs matching colours and several fittings. Our guide to when to order bridesmaid dresses works back from the wedding date.
