From November to March, many UAE weddings move outdoors: garden lawns, beach terraces and desert camps. The days are pleasant, but evenings can be surprisingly cold, especially away from the coast, and sand, wind and uneven ground change what you can comfortably wear. The answer is not to dress down, but to choose fabrics, sleeves, layers and shoes that work outside. Here is how.

How cold does it get at a UAE winter wedding?

Colder than most guests expect after dark. In January 2026, Khaleej Times reported forecast lows of about 13°C in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and What's On reported National Centre of Meteorology readings below 10°C in mountain and inland areas, with early-morning temperatures in the desert around 5°C or lower and a chance of frost inland. In January 2022, Gulf News reported a minimum of 4°C in Ras Al Khaimah and frost on Jebel Jais.

The pattern for a wedding evening is predictable:

  • Afternoon: mild and sunny, often in the low to mid-20s.
  • After sunset: the temperature drops quickly, especially in the open desert, which loses its heat fast.
  • Late night: the coldest part of the celebration, just when the dancing and the zaffa happen.

The coldest stretch usually falls in January. What's On expected Dubai's between 10 and 22 January 2026.

Which fabrics work outdoors in winter?

Winter is the season to wear the fabrics that are too heavy for the rest of the Gulf year.

  • Velvet: warm, rich under lights and right for a winter evening.
  • Heavy satin and mikado: hold their shape in the wind and keep you warmer than chiffon.
  • Crepe: drapes well, does not cling in a breeze and photographs beautifully in daylight and lamplight.
  • Beaded and sequinned gowns on a solid base: the weight helps them hang well in wind. Lightly beaded chiffon can blow about.
  • Lined gowns: a full lining adds warmth and stops a light skirt from becoming see-through against a sunset or floodlight.

Avoid very fine, unlined chiffon or organza on its own for a desert or beach wedding at night. It is cold and it lifts in the wind. Our guide to evening dress fabrics for the Gulf climate covers each fabric in more detail.

How do you stay warm without hiding the dress?

Plan the warm layer as part of the outfit, not as an afterthought from the car.

  • Long sleeves are the simplest answer, and sheer sleeves with a lining keep the line elegant.
  • A cape gown gives drama and warmth at once; a detachable cape can come off for dancing.
  • An embroidered abaya or an evening coat worn open over the gown looks deliberate in photographs.
  • A pashmina or a wide stole in a matching or metallic tone is light to carry and easy to drape.
  • Warmth underneath: a thin thermal or silk slip under a lined gown is invisible and makes a real difference at a desert camp.

Wedding planners writing about desert weddings recommend that hosts provide shawls, blankets and heaters for guests after sunset. Many UAE venues do, but do not count on it.

A simple test before you leave home: stand outside your door at the hour the wedding ends. If you would want a jacket there, you will want one in the desert, where it will be colder still. Leave the layer in the car if you must, but bring it, along with a small torch for the walk back across the sand.

Which shoes work on sand, grass and decking?

Shoes are where outdoor weddings go wrong.

  • Sand: stilettos sink, and guides to desert outings warn that heels make walking on sand almost impossible. Choose block heels, wedges or embellished flats, and check whether the venue lays matting or a dance floor.
  • Grass: thin heels sink into lawns too. Block heels or heel protectors help.
  • Decking and terraces: stilettos catch in the gaps between boards.
  • Beach: many guests go barefoot on the sand and change at the edge of the dance floor. Bring a pair of flat sandals in your bag.

If your gown is cut for heels, have it hemmed for the shoes you will actually wear outdoors, so it does not drag through sand.

What about wind, sand and rain?

Winter in the UAE brings cold air masses and, at times, strong winds and rain. Wedding planners writing about desert weddings note that wind is often a bigger threat than rain.

  • Hair: an updo, a low bun or a secured shayla survives wind far better than loose waves.
  • Shayla and hijab: pin securely, and choose a fabric with some weight. A fine chiffon shayla will fly.
  • Skirts: full tulle skirts lift in gusts; a lined A-line or column moves more gracefully.
  • Make-up: long-wear formulas and a setting spray help with dry desert air.
  • Rain: UAE showers are short but can be heavy. Keep a compact umbrella in the car, and avoid suede shoes.
  • After the wedding: shake out sand before packing the dress, and brush beading gently.

Do the usual Gulf wedding rules still apply outdoors?

Yes. An outdoor setting changes the practicalities, not the etiquette.

  • Formality: an evening wedding is still an evening wedding. A floor-length gown or a formal kaftan is expected unless the invitation says otherwise.
  • Colours: avoid white and ivory, and follow any colour theme. Deep winter shades such as burgundy, emerald, navy and gold suit lantern light and fire pits.
  • Coverage: separate women's areas are common at Gulf weddings outdoors too, and you will still want a shayla or wrap ready for the groom's entrance.

Questions

Do I need a coat for a desert wedding in the UAE?

In December to February, bring a real layer. Desert early-morning temperatures can fall to around 5°C, and late-night celebrations get cold. An evening coat, embroidered abaya or heavy stole works.

Can I wear heels to a beach wedding in Dubai?

Only block heels or wedges, and only if there is a dance floor or decking. On open sand, flat embellished sandals are safer, and many guests go barefoot.

Is velvet too heavy for a UAE wedding?

Not in winter. From December to February, velvet is one of the best choices for an outdoor evening wedding. Avoid it from April to October.
