Istanbul has several wholesale clothing districts, and each has its own character. Laleli, near the old city, is the historic hub and is known for premium women's dresses; Osmanbey, in Şişli, leans towards formal wear; Merter, near Zeytinburnu, is the largest and mostly mid-market. For an evening-wear boutique, Laleli and Osmanbey are usually where to start, with the trade fairs as an alternative. This guide compares them and explains what to expect on a buying trip.

What is Laleli known for?

Laleli is close to Sultanahmet, along the tram line in the historic peninsula, and it was historically the first major wholesale clothing hub in Istanbul. Lonca, a Turkish online wholesale platform, describes it today as a market for premium clothing, particularly women's dresses, and ranks it as the most expensive of the main districts, noting that the centre of the trade has shifted elsewhere but that Laleli remains significant.

The Istanbul.com city guide describes a wide assortment of women's, men's and children's clothing and branded goods, with buyers often needing several days to cover the district, and notes that purchases can be delivered to your hotel or sent by cargo.

For evening wear, Laleli's strength is choice and finish: beaded and embellished gowns, modest long-sleeved styles and occasion dresses for export buyers. Expect higher prices than elsewhere, and expect to negotiate.

What about Osmanbey?

Osmanbey is in Şişli, near Taksim Square, on the other side of the Golden Horn from Laleli. Lonca describes it as covering women's and men's clothing with a focus on formal wear such as dresses, suits and ties, and places it second only to Laleli on price, because it also carries high-quality goods.

The Istanbul.com guide notes that shops in Osmanbey are grouped by type on separate streets, and that prices can be a few dollars cheaper than in Laleli, though the range is smaller.

For an evening-wear buyer, Osmanbey is worth a full day: formal dresses are a speciality, and the street-by-street layout makes it efficient to compare suppliers.

And Merter?

Merter, near Zeytinburnu on the European side, is the biggest wholesale district. Lonca estimates around 4,000 wholesalers there, mostly mid-quality men's, women's and children's clothing, and describes it as the best fit for most general boutiques. Istanbul.com adds that small textile plants and factories sit within the district, and that it is easy to reach by metro or metrobus.

For evening wear specifically, Merter is less specialised than Laleli or Osmanbey, but it is useful for everyday modest dresses, abayas, basics and accessories that round out a boutique's range. Nearby Güngören, which Lonca describes as the second-largest market, sits at the lower to middle end of the price range.

A simple plan for a four-day buying trip

If evening wear is your focus, a practical first trip might look like this:

  • Day 1, Laleli: walk the district without buying. Photograph styles you like, note showroom names, minimums and prices, and collect business cards.
  • Day 2, Osmanbey: the same for formal dresses, comparing finish and price with what you saw in Laleli.
  • Day 3, Merter or Zeytinburnu: for basics, abayas and accessories, or skip it if you are buying evening wear only. Istanbul.com notes that Zeytinburnu, next to Merter, is strongest in outerwear, leather and textiles.
  • Day 4, back to your shortlist: check samples properly, agree prices, sizes and colours, and arrange invoices and shipping.

Keep a simple spreadsheet as you go: supplier, style code, colours, size run, minimum, price and delivery time. It makes the final day far easier, and it becomes your reorder list later, when you want the best sellers again in new sizes and colours.

What is a buying trip actually like?

A few practical points that apply in every district:

  • Plan several days. Walking two districts properly takes at least three days, plus a day to re-visit your shortlist.
  • Minimums vary. Many showrooms sell by series or a minimum number of pieces per style, often with a size run. Ask before you start negotiating.
  • Bring a translator or a buying agent if you do not speak Turkish, especially for negotiating terms.
  • Check samples carefully: beading, linings, zips and seam finishes. Our guide to judging the quality of an evening dress sample has a checklist.
  • Agree the paperwork: a proper invoice, a packing list and the product description are needed for customs on arrival.
  • Shipping: showrooms can usually arrange cargo, or deliver to your hotel for consolidation. Our guide to shipping wholesale clothing from Turkey to the Gulf compares the options.

Online wholesale platforms are an alternative if you cannot travel. Lonca's own comparison lists minimum orders from none to about $500, and notes that most accept returns only for defective items.

Should you visit a trade fair instead?

For evening wear, the fairs can be more efficient than the streets, because hundreds of manufacturers show in one place.

  • IF Wedding Fashion İzmir, held every January, is devoted to bridal gowns, suits and evening dresses. Its 2026 edition reported 203 exhibitors and 2,445 international trade visitors from 71 countries, including buyers from the UAE and Saudi Arabia, according to the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality.
  • IFCO, the Istanbul Fashion Connection, held in February, is a broader apparel fair with evening and bridal sections; its 2026 edition reported more than 30,000 visitors.

Fairs let you meet manufacturers directly, see full collections and compare quality side by side. The trade-off is that they happen once a year, and minimums at a manufacturer's stand are often higher than in a showroom. Where Lianora fits

If a buying trip is more than your boutique needs, Lianora does that work from the Gulf side. It supplies evening and bridesmaid dresses from established Turkish ateliers, with a veteran Turkish designer checking the finished garments, and sells to boutiques with no minimum order: the price per piece steps down at 1, 3, 6 and 10 pieces per colour. Delivery across the UAE and the GCC takes 10–15 days from the confirmed order, with customs duties and taxes paid by Lianora. Read ordering and payment, or browse the evening dresses.

Questions

Which Istanbul market is best for evening dresses?

Laleli and Osmanbey. Laleli is known for premium women's dresses and the widest occasion-wear choice; Osmanbey specialises in formal wear at slightly lower prices.

Is Merter cheaper than Laleli?

Generally, yes. Merter is the largest district and mostly mid-market, while Laleli sits at the premium end. For evening gowns, the cheaper option is not always the better value once quality is compared.

Can I buy wholesale from Turkey without travelling?

Yes, through online wholesale platforms, buying agents or regional suppliers. Check minimums, delivery times, who pays customs and whether returns are accepted before ordering.
